Update November 29, 2017: The recount didn’t result in Skerry earning enough votes to retain his seat on the School Committee. Full results are available on the city’s website.
Robert E. Skerry, Jr., a long-time School Committee member who lost his seat by just 29 votes in Medford’s recent election, is seeking a recount.
Medford’s Board of Registrars of Voters will meet on Monday, November 20 at 11 am to discuss the call for a recount.
Skerry last lost an election in 2009 but was re-elected in 2011. He was re-elected to the School Committee in the 2013 and 2015 elections.
Two new members joined the School Committee, Michael Ruggiero and Paul Ruseau. There was one open seat on the six-member body due to Ann Marie Cugno’s unsuccessful bid for City Council. Ruseau earned 4,014 votes while Skerry received 3,985, according to unofficial results.
According to Ruseau, the recount is taking place Thanksgiving weekend. Ruseau is seeking volunteers to observe the process and is also asking for donations to help pay for legal fees. Ruseau said he can’t pay for an attorney with his campaign account.
