Mayor Stephanie M. Burke, City Councilors, and School Committee members are in the middle of reviewing budget proposals for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The School Committee will hold its budget hearing on Monday, June 19 following its regular meeting, which begins at 7:00 pm. The meeting has been moved from City Hall to the Medford High School library. The proposed school budget is $2 million more than the current year.
The City Council has already held several budget meetings and will hold one on Wednesday, June 21 about the school budget with School Superintendent Roy Belson.
According to a statement from Mayor Burke, the proposed fiscal year 2018 budget is $167,117,437, a 3.1% increase from the current year.
Other budget highlights include proposals to create a full-time, year-round Recreation Department; hire a recovery coach to help the city deal with the opioid crisis; increase funding for the library; create a traffic engineer position; and to hire a crime scene analyst and information technology specialist for the police.
