Mayor Calls for New Plaque to Honor Medford Veterans

Mayor Stephanie M. Burke has announced that the City of Medford will be commissioning an additional plaque to include the names of any veterans who honorably served our country and are not listed on the current monument at Veterans’ Memorial Park on Winthrop Street.

Eligibility requirements include enlistment while a resident of Medford and being honorably discharged. The Monument Committee has also set the following exceptions to be listed:

– If a WWII or Korean War veteran enlisted from another city or town but resided in Medford for no less than 30 years;

– If a Vietnam veteran enlisted from another city or town but resided in Medford for no less than 20 years.

– Veterans who served in Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, as well as those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom who enlisted after 9/11/2001, do not have an entry requirement. However, current Medford residency is required.

For consideration, submit an application postmarked by March 15, 2017 to City of Medford Veteran Services, Room 100, 85 George P. Hassett Dr., Medford, MA 02155. Visit the Veterans’ Office website, www.medfordma.org/departments/veterans for an application or pick one up in Room 100 at Medford City Hall.
